We have had our home decorated for Christmas for a couple of weeks now. Hanging in our kitchen, I have a hand towel that says “Jesus is the reason for the season.” True, right? However, it’s much easier to say that then to live it out. Culturally - Advent looks a lot differently than it was intended to look like. It was supposed to be a time of worship, preparation for our hearts through fasting and prayer, and a time of sacrifice and slowness. However, all over the world, Christmas has become a holiday centered around gifts.
I distinctly remember a few years ago, I was out shopping, and I overheard a woman on the phone say, “I only got him a Nintendo Switch and a few games for it. I HAVE to get him more.” I had no idea who she was talking about but that’s a pretty expensive Christmas. It makes me wonder: Why do we do this to ourselves?
Instead of saying, this is enough, we say, “I need to do more.” The reality is that regardless of how much we give or do for another person, it will never be enough to truly satisfy them for the duration of their life and beyond. Only Jesus can do that.
Friends, we are not enough, but He is. Instead of focusing this season on what we’re not though, (or what we don't have OR what we're not giving) let’s focus on what we have in Jesus. That is freedom, forgiveness, unconditional love, hope, peace, and joy. Let’s fill ourselves with Him and pour from that this Advent and Christmas season.
Have a great week!
"Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift."
